Maseru Children's Village
2005 was a better year for MCV financially. We struggled in 2004 but we have managed to receive a few successful grants from various charities.
In 2005 Maseru Children’s Village managed to take care of 39 children who were either abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned including AIDS orphaned children and children who are infected by HIV. MCV with the Social Work Programme managed to locate the homes of 11 children. Children were placed to their respective homes. The re-united families participated in counselling sessions before the children arrived back in their care. One child absconded while being at MCV. As a result, 27 children remained at MCV at the end of 2005. The younger children at MCV spend their days in an on site pre school. The elder children are all pupils at St. James Primary School carrying out their primary education.
Our therapy activities are improving every day. We have professional support from UNICEF and this has been very much appreciated.
At the moment we have 21 children, 3 of those are HIV+. We have 6 girls and 15 boys. Their ages range from 2 to 15 years old.
Latest update:
About 2 months ago building work began at the bottom of our village. The play area for the children has temporarily been removed as construction is underway of building an on site hospice so MCV can begin to offer Palliative care. Funding has been given from Netherlands and we are all very excited and happy about this new building taking place.
On (26-04-06) Lerato Seleso left MCV. Lerato has been at the village since she was a small baby, now at four years old she has been placed in the care of SOS, an adoptive childrens home based in Maseru, it is here where she will be re-united with her elder brothers who are under the care of SOS. We all miss her greatly but are happy that she's back with her family.
On (26-05-06) Mohapi Setho left the village through court order to be re-united with his grandmother. Mohapi's family were very pleased to have him back and we're happy that he's been found a home, although as per usual when any child leaves we all miss him hugely!
